Sambhavam Adhyayam Onnu - When a Forest Begins to Bend Time

Sambhavam Adhyayam Onnu: A Time Loop Mystery That Begins Deep Inside the Forest

Stories about time loops have always been fascinating. The idea that a person can be trapped inside repeating events, slowly figuring out how things work, opens up many interesting storytelling possibilities. We have seen several movies and shows explore this concept in different ways over the years. Some focus on action, some on emotional consequences, and some on the puzzle itself.

Malayalam cinema does not often explore this territory. So when Sambhavam Adhyayam Onnu, directed by Jithu Satheesan Mangalathu, arrives with a story built around a strange forest and a time loop idea, it immediately stands out from the usual films we see.

The film tries to mix mystery, fantasy and thriller elements, all set within a dense forest near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. While the movie has its share of flaws, the core idea behind it is interesting enough to keep you curious about what exactly is happening.

The Setup

The film begins with a short sequence set many years ago. In the middle of a forest at night, a woman arrives with a few tribal assistants to dispose of two bodies. One is a young local woman who has been killed. The other is the woman’s own husband. But something strange happens. The husband’s body disappears before they can finish the job.

It is a brief opening, but it creates an uneasy feeling right away. Something about this forest clearly is not normal.

The story then shifts to the present day. We meet Anand, a civil police officer who is on his way to join a new station after receiving what he calls a punishment transfer. To make matters worse, his wife is about to give birth soon, so the timing of the transfer could not have been worse.

On his way to the station, Anand gets involved in an accident near the forest and ends up helping an injured Tamil Nadu police officer who seems to have escaped from something inside the woods.

Soon after that, another police officer goes missing inside the same forest. A distress call through the wireless system suggests that someone is trapped deep inside near an old temple. Naturally, Anand and a group of policemen decide to go inside the forest to investigate.

That is when things start getting strange.

When the Forest Starts Playing Tricks

As the team moves deeper into the forest, the situation slowly becomes more confusing. Certain things start repeating. Events feel oddly familiar. Characters begin encountering moments that seem like they have already happened before.

Gradually, the film reveals that the forest might not be following the normal flow of time.

The interval twist is where the film really grabs attention. Up to that point, the movie builds tension slowly, dropping small hints here and there. When the reveal finally comes, it works quite well and makes you interested in seeing how the characters deal with the situation.

Interestingly, this movie is actually based on a short film made earlier by the same director. That short film introduced the basic concept in about fifteen minutes. The feature film expands that idea into a much larger story.

But expanding a short film into a full length movie is never easy. In Sambhavam Adhyayam Onnu, that stretching is mostly visible in the first half. Once the central idea becomes clearer, the second half starts exploring different possibilities within that concept.

Watching the main character slowly understand the rules of this strange setup becomes one of the more engaging parts of the film.

The Forest as a Character

One thing the movie does well is the setting. Almost the entire film happens inside the Dhoni forest region in Palakkad, near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. The area is known for its thick vegetation and complicated pathways.

Because of this, the forest itself starts feeling like an important character in the story.

There is also a mysterious temple somewhere inside the woods that plays a role in the narrative. The temple is connected to a crow shaped deity and some local myths surrounding the area. This cultural element adds an interesting flavour to the story, making it feel less like a typical science fiction idea and more like something rooted in local folklore.

The sound design helps build the atmosphere as well. The quietness of the forest, combined with subtle background sounds, creates an uneasy mood in several scenes.

Siddharth Bharathan’s Storytelling Moment

One of the moments that stood out for me in the film was the way Siddharth Bharathan narrates a portion of the story.

There is a certain charm in the way he delivers it. It feels less like a typical explanation scene and more like someone sitting down and telling a story in the traditional sense. The tone, the pauses and the way he draws you into the narrative reminded me of older Malayalam storytelling styles.

It also brought to mind the way his mother, KPAC Lalitha, used to perform similar moments in films. She had this special ability to make the audience feel like they were inside the story itself just through her expressions and voice. Siddharth Bharathan’s narration carries a bit of that same feeling.

For a moment, the film almost feels like a folk story being told around a fire rather than just a mystery being explained on screen. That small portion adds a lot to the atmosphere of the movie.

Performances

Askar Ali plays Anand, the central character who slowly starts understanding what is happening inside the forest. The character is meant to be the audience’s perspective in the story.

However, there are moments where the performance feels slightly underwhelming. Certain scenes involve major revelations, but the reaction on his face does not always reflect the seriousness of what he has just discovered. A bit more emotional depth in those moments could have made the journey more convincing.

Assim Jamal appears as SI Ashokan, who accompanies Anand during the investigation. The character is written as a supportive colleague, though some reactions in key moments feel slightly exaggerated.

Vineeth Kumar plays another police officer who has a short temper. The role does not offer much scope in this film, but it feels like the character might become more important if the story continues in another part.

Among the Tamil Nadu officers, the actor who played Stephen leaves a neat impression.

Cinematography and Technical Aspects

Personally, I felt the cinematography could have been handled slightly differently.

The film uses a lot of close up shots. While close ups are important in emotional scenes, I felt the movie could have used more wide shots to show the forest surroundings. In a story like this, the environment itself plays a big role, so showing the scale of the forest might have added more depth to the visuals.

Another thing I noticed was the camera movement in some of the vehicle shots. The shaking in those scenes did not feel like a creative choice but more like a technical issue.

That said, the film does try some interesting techniques. Instead of relying too heavily on visual effects, it uses changes in colour tone and sound design to create dramatic impact.

Some Logical Questions

By the end of the film, the story attempts to answer some of the questions raised earlier. The final portions try to explain certain aspects of the reality we see in the movie.

But there are still a few things that feel slightly confusing. Some parts of the loop mechanics do not fully add up. For example, certain actions taken by the characters raise questions about how exactly the loop works.

There are also small moments where character reactions feel a bit odd. One example is when a particular name is mentioned for the first time, something that should ideally create a strong reaction, but the expression does not quite match the situation.

These are not huge issues, but they do stand out when you think about the story afterward.

Final Thoughts

Sambhavam Adhyayam Onnu is an interesting attempt at bringing a time loop mystery into Malayalam cinema. The concept itself is quite fascinating, and the forest setting adds a unique atmosphere to the story. At the same time, the film feels like the beginning of something rather than a complete experience on its own. There are clear signs that the story might continue in another part. If that happens, tightening the writing and trusting the audience a little more could make the next chapter even stronger. For now, the movie works as a curious first step into a mysterious world where time does not behave the way we expect it to.
